The Alliance of West Virginia Champion Communities was initiated through the Empowerment Zone Program in 1993.
The Champion Community
directive was to improve community development and mitigate the negative effects of economic problems resulting from job losses in mining and other industries.
Each community was empowered to identify and solve their own problems to achieve sustainable development.
The leadership of member West Virginia Champion Communities found it beneficial to share their experiences with each other and formed The Alliance. Its "open door" operating style invites interested people to participate in monthly meetings (3rd Wednesday) to hear about local projects and share
ideas. A variety of projects are discussed with the intention of replicating successful elements into new projects.

NEWS! Coal River Road Neighborhood Wireless Network created in Lincoln County
One Economy, Inc. with the Alliance has partnered to create a Neighborhood
wireless network as a demonstration project to determine the feasibility of
using and sharing a satellite broadband connection in a rural setting.
Please read the report to see if creating such a network may be a way to get
high speed broadband to your community.
