Unfinished Business

1.      “ WV. Distressed Communities Broadband Assessment Project” (BAP)

Completed all the Community meetings. Discussion of Provider meetings and how they can help us get Broadband the our rural areas.

Marcel discussed the provider meetings and what types of comments were given. The providers realize from the survey that rural areas have a pent up demand for broadband and want to have the same opportunities provide in the urban areas. Very good conversations with the provides and have talked to other possible solution providers other than the typical telecommunications companies ie: AEP broadband over powerline (BPL) and Micrologic (Wireless Provider).

2.      05/06 Benedum Grant

The continuation of the marketing of the Alliance and the Champions continues in the development of the inserts for a mailing campaign and for displays at the Broadband Conference in October.

Gwen Hagaman has been working with many members and is proceeding on several brochures.

   3. 501c3 Status

Paperwork was turned in by the Attorneys and awaiting reply from the IRS.

We have our designation!! It took 10 months, $3000.00 and many hours of Marcel and the Attorneys time to get accomplished.

             4.  AllianceWV.org Website

Website enhancements being developed to create a site that reflects the identities of each of our champions. Suggestions are welcome.

Gwen Hagaman will be working with Steve Reynolds to incorporate some of the brochures into the site as well as to assist in expanding the site and adding more functionality.

5. Coal Connectivity Grant

Meetings are taking place with the Alliance, USDA, Benedum and the Community Connect Foundation to seek ideas to continue our efforts statewide. It has been determined that the Family Resource Network (FRN) can provide the collection of the survey data. Church based groups can also play a role in this capacity in our rural communities. Strategies on how to get more investment of Broadband deployments is the main topic of discussion.

Marcel discussed that interest from other FRNs to be involved in our assessment projects in the future. They feel that this initiative has excited the community and helps them to help their citizenry.

Reports: Community Reports

The reports presented last meeting showed the progress from the champions in attendance.

We need to hear from the others so we can share experiences and best practices.

Speaker:

Greg Adolfson, DEP – Deputy Administrator – Office of Innovation to discuss the Sustainable

Community project. Greg, will make a presentation on this project involving environmental issues

that was funded in part by Benedum and desires to work with our group to have impact in our

communities.

Presentation focused on how the initiative can help homeowners, schools, businesses and community institutions reduce their energy use, water consumption, and waste generation. They utilize WV. Sustainable Communities Corps interns from the nation that provide enthusiasm and vision to the project and are eager to work with the communities. They are currently working in Nicholas County and are looking to expand into our distressed areas. They are looking to work with Lincoln County for a project. Information was provided for other areas that have interest to contact DEP.

Will have a short tour of the ‘state of the art’ 911 facility

The group toured the facility hosted by Allen Holder – 911 Director. He gave demonstration of a call coming in over a Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) system that they have implemented. Discussion as to how they no longer incur long distance charges and are reducing their telephone bills. The site is very impressive and has been designed to allow for updating and to meet the needs of any emergency.
